Image sources & licences

Product names, brands, quantities, categories and the product photographs in Yammo come from Open Food Facts, an open food database maintained by volunteers.

The two parts carry two different licences:

• The database (names, brands, quantities, categories) is available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0, with individual contents under the Database Contents License 1.0.
• The product photographs are available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 licence (CC BY-SA 3.0). They were taken and uploaded by Open Food Facts contributors.

Changes to the data that originate in Yammo — a barcode someone creates at the shelf, for instance — go back under the same terms.

The product photographs depict third-party trademarks and packaging designs. Those rights belong to the respective manufacturers; the photo’s CC licence does not extend to them. We show the images solely so a scanned product is recognisable — there is no affiliation with the manufacturers, and none of them endorses or reviews Yammo.

If you hold rights to a photo or a mark and would rather it were not shown here, reach us via Support. We will remove it and report it to Open Food Facts.

Ratings, reasons and comments come from the app’s users — not from Open Food Facts and not from the manufacturers. How they are produced is described in the Terms of Use.

The starter ratings

So the app does not start out empty, it ships a small number of marked starter ratings derived from rating distributions retailers publish themselves. They are flagged as such in our database and never stand in for a real answer.

The app uses Apple VisionKit and Google’s ML Kit text recognition to read a photographed till receipt. Both run on the device; the photo never leaves the phone. The open-source libraries used and their licences ship inside the app bundle.
